JEANE Howes wants to build a retirement home for old and special needs dogs but she needs help from the community.

“Lots of older dogs end up in the pound or are put to sleep but I want to give them an extra year or two,” she said.

“Older dogs can be hard to look after but we will welcome them in and rehome the dogs where we can.”

As the president of the Best Friends Animal Rescue, Ms Howes has been rescuing dogs for about 10 years but her latest project is much more ambitious.

After receiving permission to build the home in the Perth Hills from the City of Swan in April, Ms Howes is making her dream a reality but she does not have the estimated $180,000 to build it.

A quiz night will be held at the South Perth Community Centre on November 5 to raise money for the project.

“The idea came from when I was a kid; I told my mum that when I had enough money, I would build a big home for dogs,” Ms Howes said.

“It was a great feeling when we got approval because I had been trying to get the tick for many years.

“We will be able to house 30 dogs: there will be four bedrooms, two quarantine kennels, a laundry and a bathroom.

“It will be different from a kennel environment, it will be more like a home environment.”

Ms Howes said money raised from the fundraiser would help with costs of building the facility.

“We are going to start building it slowly but we are looking for any tradies that can help us out,” she said.

“We’ve had a carpenter and brickie come on board but I know the costs of things like concrete will be a lot.

“The feedback that we’ve received about the project has been really positive, people have told me it was a dream of theirs too.”
