Boarding at Penrhos stoked flames of success

HARRIET Leavesley believes being a boarder at Penrhos College helped her with her studies and has fuelled her goal of working overseas.

The graduate was among the students at the school to perform well as it finished third behind Perth Modern and Presbyterian Ladies’ College in terms of academic results in WA.

Harriet (17) had an ATAR score of 97.95 and has been offered an assured pathway to law at the University of Western Australia.

She moved to Penrhos College from Year 10 after studying at Margaret River Primary School and Margaret River High School in her home town.

“My experience at Penrhos was really good, everyone was very welcoming,” she said.

“There were ups and downs, there was some points when I wanted to go but I had good friends who helped me.

“I think being a boarder, it helped with my study because I had a structure, we studied for two hours after school in our rooms.

“After dinner, I would then study for two or three hours,” she said.

Harriet said her target ATAR score was 96 so she was surprised to surpass that.

“My first preference is an assured pathway to law at UWA but my dream is to eventually do something international,” she said.

“I think being a boarder gave me independence and the skills to look after myself.

“My secret was being flexible with my studies and keeping a balance between my social life and studying.

“I’ve got two older sisters who went to Penrhos, my mum went there and my dad actually went to kindy and pre-primary there too.”

College principal Meg Melville said the accomplishments of the Year 12 students were the result of incredible commitment to their academic “personal best” throughout their senior secondary years of schooling.

“Our academic staff worked extremely hard with the students both in and out of class, as teachers and mentors, to enable the girls to achieve to the very best of their potential,” she said.

“We are extremely proud of the academic accomplishments of our 2016 Year 12s, especially taken in context with the broad range of co-curricular, community service and leadership activities that these students involved themselves in.

“Our goal is always to improve the performance of all of our Year 12 students, whatever the ATAR or alternative pathway they may be striving form.”
