Thick black plumes of smoke continued to bellow from the boat as service crews worked to contain the fire.

A smoke alert was issued for the City of Belmont around Stoneham Street between Great Eastern Highway and Resolution Drive before the fire was extinguished.

Water Police towed the gutted boat about two hours after the fire started on-board.

The cause of the blaze is still unknown but believed to have been electrical.

The owner of the vessel is overseas.
