A CAR on fire has led to a major highway blockage this morning but lanes have re-opened.

Two cars collided at the intersection of Albany Highway and Welshpool Road in St James about 8am, and one of the cars showed signs of fire.

Albany Highway at Welshpool Road was closed from both directions with heavy congestion.

Main Roads tweeted the crash has been cleared and all lanes were re-opened.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokesperson said it was reported the engine bay of one of the car was showing signs of fire, which was quickly extinguished.

“The vehicle has since been removed and DFES cleaned up a spill,” she said.

“We had four appliances there, two from Welshpool Fire station and two from Kensington.”

Police said the people involved appeared to have minor injuries.
