PROMOTING sustainable and waterwise gardens has earned a Carlisle-based community organisation a prestigious award.
Volunteer Task Force (VTF) claimed the Landscape Industries Association of Western Australia’s Award (LIA WA) of Excellence in the Sustainability Residential category on August 19.
The award was presented at Fraser’s in Kings Park for the organisation’s waterwise project, which involves volunteers transforming the gardens of clients.

READ NOWVolunteer Task Force chief executive officer Kath Snell said the project started as an idea four years ago and it had grown into a core service.
“Our waterwise service incorporates sustainability and client support combined with the understanding of the benefits of gardening and maintaining a natural environment which is something that VTF truly lives and breathes,” she said.
“This project engages staff and volunteers and ensures a safe and pleasant garden setting for clients who can once again enjoy their gardens with decreased costs, maintenance and water requirements.
“It’s really a win for everyone involved and the environment. We are very proud of such a wonderful program and thankful for LIAWA for supporting and recognising the work we do.”
VTF waterwise champion Rachel Levell manages the service from Victoria Park to Armadale.
“Waterwise is something I am extremely passionate about and the gardens are usually transformed in one day with a team of staff and volunteers which have included school and corporate volunteering groups,” she said.
The organisation also has water wise champions running from depots in Carlisle, Wanneroo and North Perth enabling delivery of the service to span as far North as Two Rocks, South to Mandurah and inland to Mundaring.
As well as gardening, the organisation offers transport, social support and domestic assistance.
