RSPCA WA communications manager Richard Schoonraad said it was a statutory requirement to keep any animal that came into a pound facility for seven days to give owners an opportunity to come forward but beyond that all pounds would generally have different policies in regards to re-homing and euthanasia.

“In order to help alleviate the number of animals that end up in a pound facility, pet owners should be responsible by ensuring their animals are de-sexed and micro chipped so if they are picked up by a ranger they can be returned safely,” Mr Schoonraad said.

“The other thing that can help to alleviate the number of animals that might be euthanised in other pound situations is to look at adopting a rescued animal if you are shopping for a pet rather than buying a new animal.”

The cities of Fremantle and Wanneroo rates of putting animals down is almost zero due to their re-homing them to animal care facilities such as the Cat Haven in Shenton Park.

This is a similar case for dogs in Fremantle and the City of Rockingham with most going to refuges such as Shenton Park.
