City of South Perth encourages nominations for Volunteer of the Year Awards

THE public is being encouraged to nominate volunteers who make a difference in the City of South Perth for an important award.

Nominations for the 2016 Volunteer of the Year Awards are open for three categories Junior Volunteer of the Year, which is for people under 18, Young Volunteer of the Year, which is for 18 to 25 year olds, and the main prize Volunteer of the Year.

People have until September 30 to nominate someone with winners to be announced on December 5, which is Thank a Volunteer Day.

City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty said the council was looking for volunteers who made a significant contribution to the community.

“We are looking for members of the general public to nominate volunteers who really have gone over and above their roles as volunteers,” she said.

“Volunteers play a vital role in our community, they contribute in so many ways whether it is socially, culturally or economically and our City values the enormous positive role these people play in our community.”

“Personally, volunteers gain new experiences and insights, create connections with people and it is a way of giving back and helping others providing them with a sense of accomplishment.”

Ms Doherty said organisations like the South Perth Youth Network (SPYN) was an example of a volunteer organisations that helped the community by developing local projects, events and activities for young people within the city.

“Each year SPYN is heavily involved with the planning and implementing of activities and events for National Youth Week,” she said.
