Mayor Sue Doherty put forward a motion during last week's council agenda meeting to lodge a submission with the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor requesting that the Dan Murphy's application be advertised for public comment.
The motion included a proposed budget of $20,000 to appoint lawyers to prepare grounds for an objection letter to be sent to the Department.
Some councillors at last week's meeting questioned City of South Perth CEO Cliff Frewing about the figure of $20,000 to which Mr Frewing replied that figure is based on his experience in these matters.

READ NOW"To prepare a compliant submission, you need legal brains which can cost $400 an hour, which can be one week's work for lawyers. It may cost less, it may cost more but we owe it to the community to put in the best submission we can," he said.
The Dan Murphy's development application was approved by JDAP on April 17 this year in a three to two vote.
Councillor Kevin Trent said he hoped for the backing of the community in regards to the mayor's motion.
"I hope the Save Como Action Group can get numbers on a petition," Mr Trent said.
The motion will be discussed at this week's council meeting.
