A Cloverdale-based charity is raising funds to help those affected by domestic violence with a special high tea event.

Starick will host a Mother’s Day high tea fundraiser at the Pagoda ballroom in Como on Saturday, May 13.

The organisation provides support for women and children in the south-east metro area facing domestic violence by providing accommodation, counselling, supported community housing, court support, children’s programs, and community outreach services.

According to a 2012 report from Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety, one in four women in Australia have experienced at least one incident of violence by an intimate partner.

Starick marketing officer and jazz musician Jane Cornes said the charity helped families begin again, and the event was a natural fit for Mother’s Day celebrations.

“The whole thing about Mother’s Day is it’s about recognising mothers, and that’s basically the core of what Starick does, supporting mothers and their children escaping family domestic violence,” Jane said.

“It’s a great way of combining a day out in a beautiful setting and helping support women escaping domestic violence at the same time.

“Every cent that’s made goes to Starick and its work.”

Mums are invited to a traditional high tea of sweets and savouries, teas and coffee, along with raffles, auctions, and live jazz music from the Jane Cornes Trio.

“We play a lot of torch songs and jazz standards from the last 50 years. So a bit of Peggy Lee, a bit of Beatles, a bit of 60s kind of popular stuff,” Jane said.

The Starick high tea takes place from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Tickets are $65 and can be booked through trybooking.com/263192 or on 9478 5300.
