Como apartment complex approved, residents not happy

A SIX-STOREY apartment complex has been approved for a residential Como street by the Metro Central Joint Development Assessment Panel (JDAP), sparking comments that it could be the first of many in the area.

The development at 87 Robert Street was approved during a meeting on October 4 and includes 23 residential apartments with the total height of the building being just under 20m.

The project was designed by MJA Studio with Parcel Property being responsible for delivering it for the Alcock Family.

The development is the first of its kind in the Cassey Quarter, a piece of land in Como, which is a part of the Canning Bridge Activity Centre Plan area that allows for developments between six and eight storeys.

Leonora Street resident Frank Costa previously expressed his fears that his family would lose their privacy if the development was approved as it was next to their house.

Following the decision, he told the Southern Gazette that he was disappointed with the decision.

“You saw the things that the panel was concerned about, stormwater, plants and setbacks but there was nothing discussed about overshadowing,” he said.

“The impact is going to be huge and it’s going to create a can of worms.”

Parcel Apartments general manager Danielle Davison said the development saw the start of a new phase of housing options for the established Como community and would create more vibrancy in the area.

At the JDAP meeting, several panel members commented on how the area was going to be in transition but the building was well designed and attractive.

City of South Perth councillor Glenn Cridland was the only panel member to vote against the development.
