SCHOOL psychologist Tracy Hart’s heart lies with helping students look after themselves psychologically so they can lead a healthy and happy life.

Based at Penrhos College in Como, Ms Hart recently received a $5000 NGS Super Scholarship to further help students and teachers by attending national and international educational conferences.

The Mount Hawthorn resident will attend professional development courses in Canberra and London where she’ll learn how to adapt Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), a framework for a psychologically healthy life, into a strategy appropriate for group settings.

Next year, Ms Hart will attend the Australia and New Zealand Association for Contextual Behavioural Science Conference in Canberra and will be trained by Dr Paul Flaxman from City University in London.

Ms Hart said ACT helped individuals connect with what really mattered to them, while developing the skills to cope with their busy lives, and difficult situations, thoughts and feelings.

“These skills are important to all of us – when we look after ourselves psychologically, we increase our capacity to engage effectively in our work and play and live fuller and more meaningful lives,” she said.

“After these professional development opportunities I will be looking to develop ACT training with groups of students at Penrhos College through the Thrive Program.”

Ms Hart will also work with Penrhos College colleagues and the education sector to develop a broader understanding and reach of ACT and its benefits to people’s wellbeing.
