Council rates: Victoria Park’s farcical ‘process error’

VICTORIA Park councillors were hauled in to council offices on Tuesday evening to formally authorise advertising the council’s plan for next year’s rates – more than a week after actual advertising had started

The farcical, albeit required, 13-minute meeting confirmed the differential rates figures proposed to calculate council rates payments for 2019-20.

Cr Karen Vernon said it was a “process error” that town officers advertised the information without first seeking formal endorsement from the elected councillors.

She accepted the council would cop some criticism over the hastily-arranged emergency meeting, which she had demanded.

Ratepayers have until June 13 to make a submission about the rates proposal, which suggests a rate in the dollar of 8.63c for residential properties and 9.65c for non-residential properties and a minimum annual rates of $1266.
