Council’s dog ban for Swan River island an ‘error’

BELMONT council’s plan to ban dogs from a small bird-haven in the Swan River proved short lived after it was realised the council has no jurisdiction for the area.

The council was forced into an about-face last week, rescinding the decision it made in February to issue fines to owners of unleashed dogs in Garvey Park and create a dog-free zone at Ron Courtney Island between Ascot and Ashfield.

However, only the Swan River Trust has authority to manage and maintain the island.

Cr Jenny Davis had led the push for enforcement actions after birdwatcher Peter Melling claimed multiple birds had been killed by dogs on the island.

Councillors will reconsider dog rules for parks and environmentally sensitive areas and parks across the City of Belmont, including Garvey Park and Tomato Lake, at a later date.
