Two closely-located companies won gold at the annual Printing Industries Craftsmanship Award last month in the category of finishing for their entry ‘We Don’t Need a Map’.

Director Robert Sams said the staff got a kick out of winning gold and it was testament to the high quality of work they produced.

‘I think if you’re in the industry you have to have the passion or you wouldn’t be in it,’ Mr Sams said.

‘There’s a lot of frustration along the way but a lot of joy when you get to the final product.’

Mr Sams said bookbinding was a niche industry of craftsmanship and manufacturing and one that demanded high quality skills.

‘I think a lot of people tend to forget about print because with all the technology now they’re more interested in what they can download for their tablet or their phone,’ he said.

Mr Sams said no job was too small or too big for the company and people should remember restoration was always an option for their old, beloved books.

‘Why throw it away when you can repair it?’
