FULLY fitted with sprung dance floors and mirrors, two dance studios have popped up in Como to welcome children with classes starting next week.

Universal Dance & Performance offers ballet, jazz, tap, musical theatre, hip hop, acrobatic and contemporary for 2 – 16 year olds during school terms.

Director Jaclyn Clarke said she knew there was a need for a purpose-built dance studio in South Perth.

“I lived in Como pretty much my whole life and had to travel for dance classes,” she said.

“We were in a hall last year and we’ve been operating for 18 months.

“We just wanted to offer something more to the kids other than a hall.”

Ms Clarke has studied at the Royal Ballet School in London, Juilliard Summer Dance Intensive in New York and Brent Street Performing Arts Studio in Sydney.

She said her own dance journey started when she was two years old and she started teaching when she was 14.

“When they first come in, the shy kids didn’t want to say their name,” she said.

“By the end of the first term, they are completely different kids, even just seeing that has been rewarding.

“Dance took me to a lot of places and I want to share my love of dance with them.”
