KENSINGTON Police and Community Youth Centre is calling for members to join a drug action group covering Victoria Park, South Perth and Kensington to start early next year.

Kensington PCYC centre manager Amanda Dow said members did not have to be local residents and could be people who worked in the area.

“When we get the group going, it is very much community led and depends on what the group identifies as priority in our area,” she said.

“We can have as many members as we need, I believe in people power if we have a common goal.

“We’re slightly different in our set up than neighbourhood watch, the STRIVE funding delivers prevention focused activities.”

Funding would be provided by Local Drug Action Group inc through the STRIVE program.

Ms Dow said the group will discuss the local issues regarding health and safety, including the impact drugs have on the community.

“It’s being able to invite the community to sit in an action group and to give a little bit of impact,” she said.

“To debunk some of the myths around why people are taking drugs and what lead them to this path, this is their lifestyle choice but how to educate them about the risks before they go down that path.”
