Drumming up success at Como Secondary College

Justin BianchiniSouthern Gazette

CONTEMPORARY jazz students at Como Secondary College have been recognised for their drumming.

Jackson Mitchell-Oehlers, Blake Freeman and Matthew van Bueren took part in the UK-based Rockschool’s drum exams.

The three chose to sit the Performance Certificate by preparing five pieces of music in a variety of styles which were performed with backing tracks for an examiner.

Teacher Marcus Perrozzi, who works with government schools tuition provider Instrumental Music School Services, was thrilled with their results. Jackson (grade 3) received a mark of 88 per cent, Blake (grade 4) 85 and Matthew (grade 6) 87.

“They showed dedication throughout this extra-curricular program, which gave them an extended learning and assessment opportunity in a new environment outside of the school program,” Mr Perrozzi said.

“They managed their time accordingly to put in the extra practice required to prepare for these exams while maintaining their grades in their IMSS course work too.”

The students will be jetting off on the school Music Tour 2019 to New Zealand in the final week of term 2.

They will form part of the 55-student group participating in the Rotorua Rhapsody 2019 festival, with music workshops and visiting local schools.  The festival will conclude with a showcase concert where students combine with other schools to present a range of ensembles including concert bands, stage bands and choirs.

Also, the Como SC Junior Concert Band has extended an invitation to primary school students taking part in the IMSS program in the Como area.

These students can join weekly rehearsals with the band if they play the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, low brass or percussion. This band rehearses on Tuesdays at 3.05pm-4.15pm in the Como SC Performing Arts complex. Email Kiara.Wild@education.wa.edu.au for further details.
