Expressing emotions

Staff ReporterSouthern Gazette

Young people involved in various Mission Australia outreach programs in Perth and Victoria Park created the works during a series of recent workshops.

Mission Australia operations manager Peta Nordberg said the initiative, which is supported by the City of Perth, was launched in response to a youth survey.

‘The survey asked young people involved in our programs and the wider public what they would like to see offered by Mission Australia,’ she said.

‘The responses overwhelmingly wanted something to do with art and dance.’

Mission Australia WA State Director Melissa Perry said the initiative also gave at risk young people a chance to express their emotions.

‘These young people are going through all number of issues, including drug and alcohol abuse, family breakdowns, mental health problems and homelessness; often a combination of these issues at the same time,’ she said.

‘Allowing them to express their emotion through art is a great creative outlet and some of the artwork is very powerful.’

The artworks, which include paintings and drawings, will be on show at a pop-up gallery, from 3-6pm at 246 William Street.
