Extortion investigation led police to alleged drug haul

Staff WriterSouthern Gazette

AN investigation into two men’s alleged extortion activities has led police to discover MDMA tablets in Perth.

Police said two men came to a home on Sutherland Way, Cloverdale to speak to a man they knew at about 10pm on January 27.

The men managed to enter the residence and allegedly demanded a woman at the address sign over the ownership of a vehicle to cover the debt by the man they wanted to see.

Three other people, all known to the pair, came to the address as the two men stayed for several hours.

The woman was able to alert a friend, who then contacted police.

Police came to the address and all but one member of the group fled the scene as they arrived.

A 23-year-old Rivervale man, who police allege was one of the first two men to arrive at the Sutherland Way home, has been charged with demanding property by oral threats.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrates’ Court on February 26.

Police continued their investigation into the incident and arrested a 23-year-old man from Ferndale on January 31.

After a visit to the man’s house for matters relating to his bail conditions last night, police allegedly found 42 MDMA tablets at the Ferndale home.

The man was charged with possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply and is due to appear in court today.

He was further charged with demanding property by oral threats, aggravated home burglary and two counts of stealing.

He is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates’ Court on February 21 on those charges.
