First woman in the job

Cr Anderson was elected to the role at the Town’s special council meeting last Tuesday, succeeding John Bissett.

She said she was humbled to be part of the historic election.

‘It is exciting to be the first female deputy mayor in the council’s 18-year history,’ she said.

‘I have worked really hard as a councillor for the past six years and I have aspired to help connect people with their community.’

Cr Anderson is the Town’s art committee chairperson.

‘There are 10 art pieces in the Town, which have added colour and quirkiness to some of the buildings in the area,’ she said.

‘I think Victoria Park can become a cultural hub for the arts. The area has so much ethnic diversity and continues to grow.

‘Victoria Park used to be an area to drive through to get to the city, but that is no longer the case. Now it is a destination people come to visit.’

Cr Anderson said the Town’s impending amalgamation with the City of South Perth and West Coast Eagles’ decision to move to Lathlain Park were major issues for the area.

‘I support the amalgamation but the peninsula must remain, and not be taken by the City of Perth.’

Cr Anderson, who has muscular dystrophy, said she would continue to be an advocate for the disability.
