KATEY and David Higgs regard their son Finlay as a miracle child.

The four-year-old has endured a lot in a short time after being diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a very rare cancerous tumour that starts in the liver that primarily affects children from infancy to about three years of age.

Finlay had 12 rounds of chemotherapy over a year and had multiple surgeries to remove the tumours, which included removing parts of his liver and his gallbladder.

“He was given a 30 per cent chance of survival when he was first diagnosed but in terms of cancer, he is stable,” Mrs Higgs said.

“There are side affects from his treatments, he has severe osteoporosis and he needs regular treatment to boost his bone density, he needs to wear hearing aids because the chemotherapy affected his hearing and he has had developmental issues.”

With Finlay’s condition improving, the family wants to raise money for the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation during the Friends of Finlay Camp Out at Lathlain Park on November 25.

West Coast Eagles and Perth Football Club players will be attending the Camp Out to sign autographs as well as conduct football drills with the kids.

There will also be a jumping castle, face painting and other camping pastimes such as a big barbecue breakfast cooked by Perth Demons Football players, a sing-along, storytelling and bubble blowing.

Mrs Higgs said it was difficult for the family while Finlay was sick because the family was often separated.

“We’ve always loved camping as a family but because Finlay was sick, we were stuck indoors,” she said.

“The Demons have supported the foundation for a number of years and we are glad they’ve come on board to help out.

“My family is super excited about the event.”
