South Metropolitan Personnel (SMP) can help those living from East Victoria Park to the Cannington area and down to Serpentine find jobs with the right hours and pacing to suit their circumstances.
Consultant Janet Sein Win said that if clients could not travel to the Gosnells office, it did not matter.
She or one of her three colleagues would go to them, and after the first appointment, clients would deal with the same person every time.
‘Most clients don’t like the changeover that happens with most job search services, being asked the same questions again and again,’ said
She said this one-on-one involvement went beyond the scope of ordinary employment services. It also included interview help, providing access to work experience or volunteering, and if necessary, transport to help clients get to work.
She said SMP supported clients at their new jobs as long as necessary to help settle in people who were capable of doing the work but might take longer than others to develop the necessary habits.
Ms Sein Win said SMP sent new clients for a Centrelink capacity assessment to identify suitable workloads, but this was where the association ended, with clients able to refer themselves.
‘Clients get to come out of their shells and just talk,’ she said.
‘I introduce them to employers and show them that they are employable, just like any other person.
‘We have good relationships with employers and that makes them feel confident about giving our people a go.’
SMP, funded by the Federal Government, also visits schools.
