Incumbents re-elected in City of Belmont local government election

BELMONT’S ballot papers are in and the votes have been counted, with incumbent councillors returned across the wards.

Bernie Ryan, Janet Powell and Lauren Cayoun were all re-elected, with some new faces coming on board to fill the empty seats in the chamber.

Cr Ryan comfortably took out East ward with 46.27 per cent of the vote, with the closest candidate, David Nairn, on 26.2 per cent.

Janet Powell was returned in South ward, followed by Jenny Davis, who will fill the empty seat left by Cr Patrick Gardner.

Lauren Cayoun took out West ward with 1279 votes, followed by George Sekulla on 788.

Mr Sekulla will fill the empty seat on council left by Cr Paul Hitt.

The turnout rate across Belmont was up on the 2015 council election.

East ward had 33.99 per cent of locals casting their vote, South ward had a surge of almost 10 per cent with 37.24 per cent of votes returned, and the West ward had a small increase to 28.77 per cent.

The term for the newly elected councillors expires on October 16, 2021.
