Ire over local govt reform prompts rally

Bill Prince, a co-ordinator for The United Councils – Rally for Democracy, said the objective was to make it clear to the State Government there were communities upset they would not get the chance to vote on amalgamations.

‘The process is being abused by the Premier and the Minister for Local Government to force unnecessary and unwarranted changes,’ he said.

Representatives from South Perth, Victoria Park, Canning, Claremont, Cockburn, Cottesloe, Kalamunda, Subiaco, Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Vincent are expected. Mr Prince hopes for a turnout of more than 3000.

South Perth community activist Peter Best said the City of South Perth and Town of Victoria Park were well on track to become a combined local government before the Minister for Local Government jumped in and ‘demanded’ the way it was done.

‘He has taken Burswood and abolished South Perth’
