A MOBILE food kitchen to encourage people to cook healthy meals from scratch and save money on take-away food will be in Belmont next month.

The Jamie’s Ministry of Food West Australian mobile kitchen will be set up in the Good Guys carpark on Alexander Road.

It will deliver hands-on basic cooking classes for seven weeks led by a team of dedicated food trainers.

“The program teaches Jamie Oliver’s hints, tips and basic home cooking skills in an effort to encourage people to cook from scratch with fresh food,” a spokeswoman said.

She said about one-quarter of all deaths in Australia were the result of diet related disease, with only one in 10 people eating the recommended daily serves of fruit and vegetables.

The program is being run with the Edith Cowan University.

The van has previously visited the ECU Joondalup and South West campuses.

ECU Deputy Vice-Chancellor Cobie Rudd said the course was helping to build life-long skills for many people.

“We see a range of benefits, including prevention of chronic disease through healthier eating,” Professor Rudd said.

Good Guys Belmont store manager Josh Rimunui said he was excited that the mobile kitchen was coming to the City.

“My team and I are looking forward to sharing the journey with our course participants, and maybe even picking up a few tips along the way,” he said.
