Jungle Body: Redcliffe dance classes help keep mum on her feet

Jessica WarrinerSouthern Gazette

DANCE classes have kept Gillian David going through some of the toughest times in her life.

Ms David is a choreographer for The Jungle Body, a group fitness program incorporating dance, boxing, cardio and more, that is spread from Midland to the world.

The classes have had ongoing physical and mental benefits for Ms David, who credits them with getting her in shape after being forced into bed rest during a difficult pregnancy.

“I think one of the biggest things, the second thing after the physical side, is how it makes you mentally stronger and helps you overcome things,” she said.

“I’ve gone through a lot while I’ve been a choreographer. My dad’s going through cancer, and also after my son I had a stillborn, then a divorce.

“I’ve gone through huge things, and I still rock up to every class. It’s my one hour where I don’t think about anything that’s going on, I do it for me. You can’t pour from an empty cup… It’s given me a lot of strength and kept me sane and feeling good.”

Those with two left feet never fear; Ms David said the classes are for everyone of any skill level, and she teaches women between 16 and 60.

“People get nervous about coming to class, it looks like so much fun but they’re nervous they won’t keep up,” Ms David said.

“But there’s only four steps to each track, and you can really push yourself if you want when you know those steps.”

The group will be raising money for Lifeline on Friday May 5 with a mega-class at Perth Town Hall at 7pm.

The Jungle Body with Gillian takes place three times a week, with two Konga classes and one Vypa class – Mondays at the Redcliffe Community Centre at 7.30pm with a live DJ, Wednesdays at Centenary Park at 7pm, and Saturday mornings at Centenary Park at 9am.

All classes are $10 each.
