“I think it’s important to learn about their heritage and have Noongar knowledge,” she said.

“It strengthens their spirit and their pride.”

The Noongar Elder, who has written a book on the subject, led a bush medicine walk with her husband Morton at the Kensington Bushland during Naidoc Week on June 28 with students from Kent Street Senior High School, Sevenoaks College and Millen Primary School.

The project, which includes a tree-planting initiative, was run by the Town of Victoria Park with Friends of Kensington Bushland.

“I think it’s great that the Town of Victoria Park put the event on and has a policy of inclusion for Aboriginal people,” Ms Hansen said.

“My interest in bush medicine came from my family.

“We used to go walking in the bush with my uncle and auntie looking for berries and taking the sugar off flowers.

“I went to Marr Mooditj Training and completed my Certificate IV in Bush and Western Herbal Medicine and I joined the National Herbalists Association of Australia.

“When I was studying, I noticed all of the information was written about plants outside of the Noongar country.”
