Aaron CorlettSouthern Gazette

A KENSINGTON Primary School student has shown plenty of creativity to claim the first prize in the middle primary category in the 2016 Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists.

Eight-year-old Akina Robles took out the award for her ink pen creation Circus Lady at the awards night, which was held at the Subiaco Library on July 25.

The Perth-born artists and Oscar winner presented Akina with the award on the evening.

Mr Tan told the young creatives that he was always impressed by what he saw in the award and that this year was no different.

“There are sheer idiosyncrasies and a quirkiness in this exhibition that you probably won’t see elsewhere,” he said.

A panel of local artists, illustrators and educators, including James Foley, Pippa McManus, Daniela Dlugocz, Wendy Bray, Gary Adamson, Rita Basilio and Robyn Jeffreys judged the award.

The finalists’ artwork will be displayed at the library until August 14 and they all took home prizes including art classes, art materials, sketch books and vouchers and the professional framing of the exhibited artworks.
