A BRASS band and students from an East Victoria Park school will be performing an updated version of songs with Aboriginal elder Richard Walley at the Vic Park Summer Street Party on Sunday, December 9.

Kent Street Senior High School students have been involved in vocal workshops with brass band Junkadelic for their performance of Kambarang and Birak, to be performed with Dr Walley.

Junkadelic creative director Ken Allen said the songs were performed last year but they wanted to bring them back with vocals and lyrics.

“We debuted these seasons songs at last year’s Vic Park Summer Street Party but they were only instrumental,” he said.

“It’s giving an opportunity for young people to sing on the main stage, with Aboriginal elder Richard Walley and for them to learn about the six seasons which are much more relevant to who we are and what we are in our place in the world.”

Kent Street Senior High School music teacher David Sanderco said the selective studio singers from Year 7 to Year 11 had been exposed to a different experience by working with a celebrated artist.

“We’d like to further expand the contemporary music program so many new bands and solo artists are being developed here,” he said.

Junkadelic vocalist and songwriter Tani Walker said she was over the moon for the students to perform and she would be a supporting singer at the performance.

“I wrote Kambarang and the melody line of Birak,” she said.

“I’m really excited to see young people sing these songs and learn about the seasons because it’s important, not just for the Noongar kids.”
