It was every kid’s dream at the McDougall Park Community Kindergarten when it was transformed into Cardboard City.
The kindergarten’s grounds were transformed into a bustling city complete with street art, farm, residential areas, a petrol station with car wash, river, gardens and an impressive skyline, reminiscent of the view from the South Perth Foreshore.
About 300 people attended the event on March 18. Children and adults were free to construct new buildings or make smaller creations.

Parent Kelly Muller said there was plenty of fun for the children as they exercised their imaginations.
“The buildings and creations morphed during the day, the cardboard was open-ended in its nature so bricks changed into funnels or vehicles as the day progressed,” she said.
“The concept of the day came from an idea to let the children have self-directed play and allow them to use their imaginations in a safe environment.
“The purpose was to showcase the ethos of the kindy, which is to learn through play.”
Mrs Muller said Cardboard City was the third year that the kindergarten had run events through the City of South Perth’s art season.
“Our event last year was Totally Addicted to Play, where we encouraged the kids to get back to basic play,” she said.
Among those who attended the Cardboard City event were South Perth MLA John McGrath, City of South Perth councillors Glenn Cridland, Fiona Reid, Colin Cala and Sharron Hawkins-Zeeb and Curtin Primary School principal Jennifer Broz.
