Living Smart course in South Perth to get new year off to sustainable start

WITH the beginning of a new year, Shani Graham is encouraging people to think about ways they can live more environmentally friendly.

Ms Graham and fellow sustainability guru Tim Darby are holding the Living Smart course in the City of South Perth from February 8 to March 22.

“It’s the time of the year when people are reflecting on their life, as well as the state of the planet, economics and social issues and they are asking themselves what they can do,” she said.

“It can be the right time to make some smart changes.”

Ms Graham said the course was designed for people who were aware of environmental and social issues but also want to take action.

We cover a wide range of topics, including the traditional power, water, living healthy and there is a focus on starting off with simple things,” she said.

“It can be things like changing your use of plastic or cycling to the train station.

“My tip to people is to ask themselves what’s important to them like family and friends and take out all the other stuff.

“You can ask yourself ‘Why do I need clothes that were made in a sweatshop’ and try to reduce your negative impacts and make yourself happier.”

Ms Graham said the courses would be mostly based at the City of South Perth’s Civic Centre.

“There will be two or three outings, possibly at people’s gardens if it’s suitable,” she said.

“We use adult learning principles, so it’s not just about lecturing but learning from each other.”
