A MAN has been charged after allegedly speeding through Perth suburbs in a stolen BMW to escape police.

It is alleged a blue BMW 530 sedan was stolen from a secure parking area at a South Perth home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police spotted the stolen BMW travelling along Great Eastern Highway in Rivervale at 4.50pm yesterday.

Police allege they tried to intercept the BMW but the driver sped off.

The police helicopter was in the area and assisted ground officers in monitoring the car.

The driver of the BMW allegedly drove dangerously and recklessly through streets from Rivervale to Sawyers Valley in Mundaring.

At the intersection of Brooking Road, the driver drove over a stinger tyre deflation system which deflated the BMW’s two front tyres.

It is alleged he continued to speed even when the front tyres began to deteriorate.

Police alleged he continued to drive the BMW with shredded tyres and on metal rims through Mundaring.

The driver then allegedly jumped from the car on Great Eastern Highway and left the car rolling.

Police said the BMW struck a cutting, deploying the airbags and trapping a passenger inside.

The 20-year-old man from Woodbridge, who was allegedly the driver, was caught by police a short time later.

He is due to appear in Perth Magistrates’ Court today charged with stealing a motor vehicle, reckless driving, having no authority to drive and possessing any drug paraphernalia.

A 54-year-old man from Midland will appear before the same court on March 17 charged with stealing a motor vehicle.
