Man charged over Burswood gas incident

POLICE have charged a 45-year-old man from Burswood over an incident in which he allegedly opened a gas cannister and threatened to set it alight in a building.

The incident occurred at a housing unit block on Claude Street in Burswood on Monday afternoon.

Police allege that about 4.30pm the man opened a gas canister and sprayed the gas around the bottom of the stairwell inside the building.

He is also alleged to have held a lighter, making verbal threats he would set the gas alight, setting fire to the occupants.

Residents were able to barricade themselves upstairs inside the premises away from the man.

The man fled the area and was located by police the following day.

Two people were taken to hospital as a precaution after feeling unwell.

The man has been charged with committing an act endangering life, health or safety of a person.

He is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court today.
