Manning resident’s long wait for freeway southbound on-ramp is nearly over

MICHAEL O’Brien has been waiting 30 years for the Manning Road freeway southbound on-ramp to be built.

The Manning resident owns one of the properties near the proposed ramp, which finally looks like it will be built in 2018/19 following an announcement from the state and federal governments.

“I remember they mentioned the ramp could be built soon, back about 30 years ago.

“It was back when my father was alive, he was the one who built the flats,” he said.

“As a resident of Manning, I welcome it being built, it will help people save time and also ease congestion and make things safer.

“It was always going to happen; I expect the Government to come to us to say it has been reclaimed and tell us the valuation of the property.”

The ramp is expected to cost $35 million, with the Federal Government contributing $28 million and the State Government paying the rest.

Swan MHR Steve Irons said the Federal Government was delivering on its 2016 election commitment to help fund the Manning Road on-ramp.

“This is a project that has the universal support of the community in Manning and will have a positive impact on road safety and congestion along the Manning Road corridor,” he said.

“Many residents have completed my surveys calling for this important piece of infrastructure and we have been pursuing this in the state and federal parliaments on behalf of the community.

“I am proud to have played a role in finally getting this on-ramp over the line and my focus now will be on making sure construction can begin as soon as possible.”

South Perth MLA John McGrath said this was a project he had been fighting for since 2005.

“When I first raised this issue in 2005 it received overwhelming community support,” he said.

“However, while the Department of Transport identified it as an important infrastructure project, others seemed to be given priority.”
