The club said this time last year it was in serious financial hardship and its 650 members were unsure if they would have to close the doors.

President Barry Rowe and secretary/ manager Jenny Davis are now leading the club, with the City of Belmont offering the $50,000 grant and new solar panels.

“I gave an undertaking to the Mayor that I would change the culture of the club and make it a positive place to bring families,” Mr Rowe said.

“We have also worked closely with an auditor engaged by the City to produce a confidential report into the past management of the club.”

The club is hoping to hold a series of community events in coming months, including a Sunday car boot sale and possible farmers’ market on Saturdays.

Ms Davis said the club could cater for various types of functions, from quiz nights to corporate bowls and birthday parties, with a bar on site.
