The two-time national champion from Bayswater Paddlesports Club and his teammate Stephen Bird were teaching at a K2 school holiday clinic at the Ascot Kayak Club last week.
Phillips said while skills like timing, stability, communication and teamwork were essential in kayaking, he also taught kids to be patient.
‘It’s a hard sport to perfect and everyone is looking to be as efficient as they can possibly be,’ he said.
‘There’s a lot of time on the water to get it right.
‘It is also about how to be a good person within the sporting community because sport only takes you so far in life; you’ve got to be a good person at the end of the day.’
Clinic participant Tim Feasey (12) said the lessons from Phillips and Bird had improved his ability to keep time while paddling and said he enjoyed kayaking because he spent a lot of time out on the water in summer.
