Otter pups go public at health check

Staff ReporterSouthern Gazette

IT WAS a family affair at the Perth Zoo last week as four 12-week-old otter pups made their public debut during a health check.

The pups, two males and two females, are the third litter born at Perth Zoo in the past 12 months as part of an Australasian breeding program for the Asian small-clawed otter.

Perth Zoo senior vet Simone Vitali dropped in on the 12-week-old otters to give them their vaccinations and a routine health check.

‘The pups, born on March 23 to parents Asia and Tuan, have started to venture out of their nest box and will become increasingly visible to visitors in the coming weeks,’ Dr Vitali said.

‘The four male siblings have been helping with the swimming lessons for the pups and also carrying food into the nest box for the youngsters.’
