PERTH Stadium is starting to take shape, as these photos snapped by Community Newspaper Group photographer Andrew Ritchie show.

The long awaited venue, scheduled to open in Burswood for the start of the 2018 AFL season, will be built to accommodate 60,000 people.

Construction is just over 30 per cent complete and the grounds will accommodate AFL, rugby, cricket, football (soccer) and entertainment shows.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder announced this week that work had begun for the Swan River pedestrian bridge that linked Perth Stadium to East Perth.

The significance of the area to the Whadjuk people was recognised with a symbolic pre-construction smoking ceremony at the East Perth end of the walkway.

Perth Stadium is estimated to cost about $1.4 billion by the time it is finished in 2018.
