THIS Saturday, Perth Zoo will go bananas over its gibbons.
It’s International Day of the Gibbon and Perth Zoo, home to two species, will host activities to raise awareness.
The zoo is home to nine critically endangered white-cheeked gibbons and three endangered Javan gibbons.
The day aims to raise awareness about gibbons and the serious threat of extinction that gibbons face globally.
The major threats to gibbons include loss of habitat and hunting pressure, often for the wildlife trade.
Since 2006, Perth Zoo has provided $136,000 to the Silvery Gibbon Project, which has helped set up the Javan Gibbon Centre and assisted with the acquisition of land in West Java.
