At the June council meeting, councillors agreed to recommend the name City of South Park to the board for possible inclusion in the Governor’s Orders of Local Government Reform.
Mrs Doherty had stressed that South Park Estate was an early subdivision of South Perth, located in the area bounded by Sandgate Street, Douglas Avenue and South Terrace, where the South Perth Civic Centre is.
‘A newspaper advertisement in 1896 for the sale of a ‘portion of the well known South Park Estate’ advised that a ‘good metalled road from the City’ provided access to the land,’ she said.
‘It described the lots as having ‘magnificent views of the City and River’ and urged prospective buyers to ‘take a trip over on Saturday next by boat, bus, or cycle’, so as to ‘not miss the opportunity of securing at minimum prices and upon the easiest terms first-class building sites in this rapidly improving locality’.’
