Police treating Belmont fire as suspicious

POLICE are investigating a suspicious fire that caused half a million dollars damage in Belmont this morning.

A spokeswoman for Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said they received a 000 call at 2.12am about a fire near Belmont Forum, just off Belmont Avenue.

It took around 60 firefighters from 15 appliances to control the fire, which was eventually contained at 2.44am.

DFES said about $500,000 in damage was caused, and the blaze was suspicious.

The street was closed around Belmont Grocery and Belmont Kebabs while police operations were underway today.
