Pub allowed six-month trial for 1am closing

But the Gazette has since discovered that Cr Keith Hayes, who made the announcement about The Publican, was incorrect in saying that the bar stays open till 1am. A check by the Gazette found that its licence only allows it to stay open until midnight.

Publican manager Jessie Grey said the venue would not want to open beyond midnight because ‘it might attract the sort of people you don’t want walking into a bar’.

Councillors were concerned support for The Causeway Bar’s application would set a precedent for licensed premises in the area to stay open beyond midnight, something council had never supported before due to concerns about adverse impacts on nearby residents and development of the popular highway precinct.

Cr Mark Windram proposed The Causeway trial a 1am closing time on Fridays and Saturdays for six months. The motion was supported by six votes to three.

In a public statement at the beginning of the meeting, Causeway owner James Crabtree said he was happy to compromise by withdrawing his request to extend the Thursday opening to 2am on Friday.
