YOUNG students have been given a leg up at an Aboriginal playgroup at St Maria Goretti Catholic School.

Moort Waabing has had success in getting its young students aged 0-4 ready for kindergarten and primary school since launching in 2014.

Facilitator Tenelle Climo said the concept of the playgroup was to provide support to families in the area.

“The playgroup is about providing the children opportunities to learn about colours and numbers,” she said.

“The children learn about games and we do things that parents can do at home, we also have services come in and do music, dance and culture-based activities as well as a breakfast program.

“The playgroup has been successful, we’ve seen kids move into kindy previously, who have been scared about the foreign environment but now they are confident about attending school.”

The playgroup runs at the school four days per week each term, from Monday to Friday.
