MORE than 1000 people attended the opening of the Church of Scientology’s newest place of prayer in Rivervale on Saturday.

According to the religion’s leaders, this was the 66th new church opened in recent years and people trekked from around the globe to attend the opening.

The church will hold Sunday services, weddings, naming ceremonies and community events such as banquets, seminars and workshops.

The $9.3 million project on the corner of Belmont Avenue and Cleaver Avenue was approved in June 2017 before having one of the conditions removed in November by the Metro Central Joint Development Assessment Panel.

Plans for the centre showed multiple classrooms and offices as well as a “purification room”.

The centre had previously been given the green light in 2015 but had a two year extension approved in June.

Scientology is a religion created by American author L. Ron Hubbard and has high profile followers such as Tom Cruise.
