#SnapPerth: life’s literally a zoo for Perth Zoo community engagement director

Bronwyn DonovanSouthern Gazette

THERE is only one place in Perth where you can have a komodo dragon as your next door neighbour.

Perth Zoo community engagement director Claire Wright is one of four executive staff members who live within the zoo’s walls.

Ms Wright’s life on-site includes regular responsibilities such as looking after her grandchildren, however she also handles zoo related emergencies, keeps an eye on the property and accepts late night vet patients and supplies.

“Living at the zoo for five years has been an experience,” she said

“You have no real sense of the fact that you are in the middle of South Perth, just a stone’s throw from the CBD.

“I get to hear animal noises instead of traffic noises; the lion roars every evening as the sun goes down and my alarm clock in the morning is our gibbons.”

Ms Wright said home is about the environment and her family.

“Apart from actually family, I see the zoo as part of my family, both the animals and the people I work with,” she said.
