PERTH Detectives have charged a 35-year-old man after a dramatic armed robbery in South Perth yesterday.

The man entered the South Piazza on the South Perth Esplanade at 5.10pm last night, allegedly armed with a hatchet and a replica firearm.

Police say he stole property from one store before entering another and attempting to take money from the till.

He was challenged by staff and ran away.

The man then allegedly walked into another store and attempted to steal money from the till.

Nearby Water Police arrived at the scene to find the store owner and customer had been able to detain the man themselves.

The 35-year-old man was charged with armed robbery, attempted aggravated armed robbery and attempted armed robbery.

He will appear at the Perth Magistrates Court today.
