PERTH’S next major public pool complex could be built in the South Perth area – potentially on Collier Park Golf Course land.
South Perth Council this week gave its officers a green light to ramp up discussions with all tiers of government and other potential stakeholders, including Curtin University, as they investigate the viability of building something on the scale of Cockburn ARC.
Choosing a location close to Curtin University could open doors for a funding partnership as well as a big user base of students and staff, preliminary research found.
As a starting point towards pulling together a business plan, council officers are touting an indoor aquatic centre including an eight-lane 25m indoor pool, an outdoor 50m pool, a six-court multisport stadium and a health club with gymnasium.

READ NOWA council officer’s report to the council last week said larger, regional-level facilities such as Cockburn ARC provided greater catchment opportunities and financial returns than smaller suburban pools.
She also wrote that the current political climate made it important to get the ball rolling on funding opportunities. The golf course was named as one possible location in her feasibility project report, primarily because of its proximity to the university, but also because of the council’s ongoing need to develop a short to medium-term masterplan for the site.
A list of preferred locations, design concepts and a business plan will be put to Council by July next year.
