TWO hairdressers from a South Perth hair salon will pack up their tools and pass on their tricks of the trade to homeless youths on their first Hair Aid overseas trip.

Hair Aid is an organisation teaching people who live in poverty the skill of hair cutting, sending hairdressers on international trips to South East Asia.

Lee Preston Hairdressing senior stylist Ronan Fitzgerald will visit Manila, Philippines for a week in January while fellow senior stylist Robyn Saunders will be going to Chiang Rai, Thailand for a week in March next year.

Mr Fitzgerald said hairdressers on the trip will teach hair cutting skills to young people and reconnect with the people previously trained by Hair Aid.

“The idea is to give them five basic haircuts so they can just do on the street, they don’t need to have a studio or electricity,” he said.

“They’ll need a water gun, scissors, a comb and that’s about it.”

Ms Saunders said she joined the Thailand trip because she wanted a bigger project to sink her teeth into after being involved with giving haircuts to the homeless in Perth.

“That’s actually going to be slightly different than Manila because we have to create an infrastructure to teach the kids, so that’s starting at grassroots,” she said.

“I like the fact that it’s not based on religion or culture, it’s just based on giving a community or people within a community the means to actually create their own income.

“The great thing is, we can stick our scissors and combs in one thing, put it in a bag and we’re out.”

Mr Fitzgerald said people have been responsive to the trip as it was more than just giving cash to a faceless organisation.

“It’s to believe in them, that you can take care of yourself if you’re just given that first step,” he said.
