THE City of South Perth has received a $10,000 grant from the State Government to provide disability awareness training, develop a work experience program and hold an employment expo to assist disability employment services.

South Perth MLA John McGrath said the grant was part of the Lighthouse Project; a partnership between the Disability Services Commission and Local Government Managers Australia to support projects that lead to increased employment of people with disability in local government.

“Employment options in local government for people with disability are set to broaden with the allocation of $122,247 in total funding for 12 projects around Western Australia,” he said.

“Local projects like this aim to develop a culture of accessibility and inclusiveness in local governments, and improve work practices, physical accessibility, effective management practices and an inclusive organisational culture.”

The Lighthouse project was developed to help local governments meet the requirements of Outcome 7, which is set out in their Disability Access and Inclusion Plans to ensure that people with disability have the same opportunities as others to obtain and maintain employment with their organisations.
