St James: lymphoma survivor raised over $50,000 for Leukaemia Foundation

Bronwyn DonovanSouthern Gazette

ST James resident Mireille Tewfik is paying it forward to the Leukaemia Foundation after she received fantastic support and care following her diagnosis with lymphoma.

Before her diagnosis in April 2014, the 72-year-old would walk about 4km before work until one day she could barely climb the three stairs to her doctor surgery.

Luckily, only a few months after her first chemotherapy treatment Ms Tewfik was told her cancer was in remission.

Since then she has hosted an annual morning tea fundraising event that has raised more than $50,000 for the foundation to date.

“It is because I got such amazing help; I had lots of family and friend support but the practical support from the foundation like getting a cleaner and having my utility bills paid while I was without a job was astounding and I believe others in the same position deserve that care as well,” Ms Tewfik said.

For this year’s morning tea, Ms Tewfik has stepped it up and collaborated with artists George Taniani and William O’Reilly, who will run a small gallery showing in addition to the event with 20 per cent of each item sold going to the foundation.

Taniani and O’Reilly officially opened Maja Art earlier this year and specialise in mixed media Aboriginal works.

Mireille’s Morning Tea will be held July 25, from 10am, at the South Perth Civic Centre.
